One Thing

Dear Redeeming Grace,

We've been thinking together for the last couple months about building our lives around the Lord. We've looked at God's working in and through the people of Israel in the book of Ezra and have considered the necessity of building our own lives with things like perseverance, joy, courage and devotion.

As we focused in last week on devotion, I was drawn to a particular Psalm which I always find inspiring in the way it expresses devotion. Psalm 27:4 ESV says this:

"One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple."

One thing. This is the heart of a single minded devotion. To consider all the possibilities of life and narrow down our desire to one thing. But what's the one thing? Being in the presence of the Lord.

In our lives of constantly competing desires, may the Lord give us such rich times of fellowship with himself that our desires would slowly be conformed to that of the Psalmist. Let's press on to build our lives in such a way that we long for his presence more than anything else.
