Who do you trust?

Dear Redeeming Grace,

In times of difficulty, a good question to ask is "In what or whom am I trusting right now?"

Psalm 9:10 says this:

"And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you."

There are a couple helpful observations we can make from this verse and think about in our own lives. First, we start with the reason for trust. The LORD does not forsake those who seek him. In other words, He is faithful and caring and He doesn't turn a blind eye to our struggles or pain. He will never abandon His children.

Second, we see that those who trust in the Lord are those who know His name. In the scriptures, one's name was closely tied to who they were; their character. Essentially the Psalmist is saying those who know God and what He's like put their trust in Him.

But one question might remain: "What if I'm struggling to trust Him?" I think the answer to that question comes at the beginning of the Psalm. He says in the first verse, "I will recount all of your wonderful deeds."

Think back over your life and recall God's faithfulness to you. Recount all the ways He's met you and led you so far. In doing so, you'll be reminded that He's trustworthy. You know His character, his name. And those who know his name put their trust in Him.
