Giving Yourself Fully

Dear Redeeming Grace,

In Dave’s message from Nehemiah last week we were encouraged to forsake the ways of the world and give ourselves fully to the things of God. These two patterns of living reminded me of Paul’s commitment in Philippians. He says this:

“But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13b-14 ESV)

Just before this, Paul lists all kinds of reasons he could boast in himself or his achievements. He could have based all his hope and confidence on earthly things. But instead, he counts them as loss in comparison with knowing Jesus and having a righteousness that depends on faith in what Christ has done.

This is a powerful example for us to follow as well. We should regularly ask ourselves what gives us joy, fulfillment, peace, confidence and hope. Is it the satisfaction of being found in Christ? Being known and loved by God? Or do we look back in a way to the things that we’ve done? Are we too easily satisfied with the temporary and fading pleasures of this life?

In God’s grace, we can strain forward to what lies ahead too. We can think on heaven in expectation of Christ's return. Feast on God’s word. Commune with him. Enjoy fellowship with brothers and sisters. Grow in being a disciple and helping others to follow Jesus too.

Let’s press on together toward the goal as we give ourselves to all the Lord has for us.
