Where Is Your Boast?

Dear Redeeming Grace,

Because we are all naturally great worshippers, Jason reminded us so helpfully last week that what matters most is WHO we worship. In worship, we are ascribing worth as a response to what we value most.

A passage that always challenges me in this aspect is Jeremiah 9:23-24.

"Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

We can so easily value and end up boasting in our own wisdom, strength, or achievements. And that list represents any number of things that we can boast in or ascribe worth to. Regardless of what draws our affections and where we find our boasting, the Lord calls us to boast in our understanding and knowledge of himself.

The more we press in to know God, the more we can joyfully celebrate God and his own delight in practicing his steadfast love, justice and righteousness in our own lives. Let's always seek to be a people whose boast is in the Lord, who alone is worthy of worship.
