Dear Redeeming Grace,

In just over a week we'll once again wake up to enjoy Christmas morning. In most homes I imagine that means we'll gather together to enjoy the tradition of giving and receiving gifts. The more I've reflected on this tradition, the more I appreciate how it points to a wonderful truth.

John 3:16 is likely the most well known verse in all of scripture. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." Love gives.

Here we see so clearly God's motivation and his action. What motivates him? Love. What does he do? Give.

Somehow in the mystery of the one triune God there is an eternal relationship of Father and Son. Christmas reminds us of God's immeasurable love. He gives truly the greatest gift imaginable in the giving of himself.

What wonder and worship ignites in our hearts when we meditate on these truths. I pray that with each gift you give to those you love this year, you will bring to mind the love of God that gave his Son for you.
